The SCOPEMA RIB Bed: The Ultimate in Campervan Safety & Versatility

Are you searching for the perfect RIB bed for your campervan conversion? The SCOPEMA Altaïr 3P is the UK’s most popular choice, and for good reason. It masterfully combines a fully tested passenger RIB seat for safe travel with a luxurious, completely flat bed for ultimate comfort.

Uncompromising Safety for Total Peace of Mind

Your safety, and that of your passengers, is non-negotiable. That’s why every RIB bed we supply is M1 Pull Tested to the latest EU standards and holds full TUV approval. This isn’t just a feature; it’s your assurance that you are fitting a market-leading product designed to perform when it matters most. With integral 3-point shoulder belts and integrated headrests, you can travel with complete confidence.

From Comfortable RIB Seat to Dreamy Bed in Seconds

The genius of the RIB bed lies in its clever “flip over” design. Say goodbye to uncomfortable, lumpy sleeping surfaces common with traditional “rock and roll” beds. The Altaïr uses the reverse side of the seat cushions for sleeping, providing a perfectly flat and supportive base for a fantastic night’s sleep.

The versatile rear cushion can be angled into multiple positions. This makes it perfect for sitting up to read a book, enjoying your morning coffee, or simply relaxing in comfort.

Clever Storage and Unmatched Versatility

A key advantage of the RIB bed design is the huge, accessible storage space it creates at the rear of your van. The rear cushion can be folded down to create a convenient parcel shelf, or it can be locked upright. Because of this, you can easily load larger items like bikes, paddleboards or surfboards, making your van more practical for every adventure.

Choosing the Right Frame for Your Van

To ensure a perfect fit, the Altaïr RIB seat is available with different frame options:

  • Standard Frame (330mm): The perfect height for all VW Transporter T5 and T6 models. Can also be used in a Ford Transit Custom with a 25mm raiser frame (sold separately).
  • Reduced Height Frame (310mm): Specifically designed for vehicles with less clearance over the wheel arch, such as the VW T4, TVP range, and similar vans.
  • Slider vs. Fixed Frame: A sliding frame offers extra flexibility in your living space. However, if you plan to store a Porta-Pottie toilet neatly underneath, you must choose the fixed frame option.

What are RIB beds?
RIB is a leading campervan bed brand in the campervan seating industry, owned by Scopema in France. Unlike typcial A frame style rock and roll beds the RIB bed can be flipped over with its simple lever and ratchet system to reveal the flat sleeping surface.

Do RIB beds have IsoFix?
Yes, all newly imported RIB beds now have IsoFix as standard, but it is always a good idea to check in case you are buying slightly older stock.

Are rock n roll beds legal in the UK?
Yes, rock n roll beds, like most camper van beds, at the very least should be MOT compliant but ideally you should be looking for a rock n roll bed that is M1 pull tested and comes with certification.

How comfortable are rock n roll beds?
Most rock n roll beds are designed as seats first meaning that high density foam is standard to ensure the seat keeps it shape. For some people the firmer cushioning inside might be firmer than you would like. You can buy mattress toppers to make these beds more comfortable.

How big is the RIB bed?
RIB beds can range from 600mm wide up to 1500mm in the UK. Standard sizes start at 1120mm. We can supply dimensional drawings if needed, please get in touch if this is the case.

How safe are RIB beds?
RIB beds, like most campervan seat/beds, are M1 tested to ensure they stay situated even in an accident. If the bed is not M1 tested, you should think twice before carrying passengers whilst driving.

What is a rock N roll bed?
Rock n roll bed is a term used to describe the more classic campervan seat/bed system. Generally, these seats have a “pull forward” mechanism to turn them into a bed. Over the years companies like Scopema have developed their campervan bed systems to be cleverer and more user friendly with their smart flip-over design. Sometimes you might find that the term “rock n roll” bed is used to describe any seat/bed fitted into a campervan, but beware that not all seat/bed systems are built equal.

Who makes RIB beds?
RIB beds are designed and manufactured in France by Scopema. Scopema have been making RIB beds for campervans since 1981 and export all over the world.

How do I know if my rock n roll bed is M1 tested?
If you are buying a campervan that has a rock n roll bed already fitted, then you are relying on the person selling you the vehicle to be able to provide all necessary certification. If this isn’t the case, then you can try to identify the brand or manufacturer of the bed and contact them directly for up-to-date certification.

What is the difference between M1 tested and MOT compliant.
Like a car MOT, when taking your campervan for its MOT all that will be checked is the seatbelts to ensure they work correctly and have no damage to them, they will not check the installation of your seat. Being M1 tested means that the seat has been sent to a test centre somewhere, been bolted to a floor jig and had up to 10 tonne of pull pressure applied to try and pull the seat away from the floor. If the seat and its installation survive the pull, then the seat and its installation has passed, and the seat is considered M1 pull tested and more importantly, safe.

What is the difference between a RIB bed and a Rock N Roll bed?
The RIB bed is a brand of quality, safe campervan seats. A rock n roll bed is a type of campervan seat that opens and closes in a particular manner. The RIB bed uses a clever flip-over hinge design making it easier to operate and importantly, ensures that you sleep on the reverse side and not the seating side.

How heavy is a RIB bed?
Weights range from 65kgs up to 125kg depending on the size of the seat.
